Women have always been in the gaming industry, they were just ignored for the most part.
Video games were marketed as boys toys in the past, but even then girls played them and never had a problem playing as a male character.
If you can relate to a cartoon plumber that says mama mia and wahoo, but can’t relate to a women, I am deeply concerned for you. You don’t even have to relate to the main character to enjoy the game. I don’t relate to Kris Deltarune in the slightest, but I still enjoy the shit out of those games.
@Yuritopiaposadism@hexbear.net shared a great little video the other day about tomb raider and why the fans loved it, it was for the levels, atmosphere and gameplay, not Lara, while the studios got it backwards and thought the people wanted Lara instead.

Lara works on posters though :( Games are sold on aesthetics and hype not gameplay. You’d think streaming would change that but alas preorders are a huge portion of day 1 sales.
