For me it works something like this:
I meet someone arguably compatible with me -> 98% chance they’re not interested in men/2% chance I miss their advances on me then they get extremely upset at me -> I meet someone arguably compatible with me -> they live too far away from me, develop a crush on them, spiral into depression once I realize how hopeless the situation is -> back to start
