I have a question: Don’t get me wrong, I have no issues with killing millionaires or people who want to harm animals, but I have always heard that this big game hunting was used to get rid of older, aggressive males and provide funding for conservation. Is this true or just some bullshit lib nonsense?

It’s bullshit lib nonsense. They deliberately cause animals’ conditions to deteriorate so they can allow those animals to be hunted. For example, deer are bred and then released into the wild for people to hunt. Obviously, deer are overpopulated because their natural predators (like wolves and cougars) have been pushed out of their habitats by humans. And this overpopulation affects other animals who compete for food.

The solution would be to relocate the deer and reintroduce their predators. Instead, they’re intentionally made to overpopulate so they can be hunted. Fish & Wildlife then use the money from hunting licenses to turn a profit.

The same is true for big game hunting. The solution would be to relocate or take older, aggressive animals into captivity. Instead, money gets involved to allow these animals to be hunted by the rich, even when they’re not far off from being endangered.

Wouldn’t reintroducing predators increase the chances of an agonizing death in the wild? I think a high-caliber bullet would be better than that. But in general I agree, there are ways to improve the situation that aren’t excuses to kill for sport

You think they’re intentionally overpopulating certain species so that they can then go hunt that species for sport all for the benefit of the animals they’re hunting for sport? What the fuck?

i think a clean shot is probably preferable to being mauled and repeatedly bitten and some amount of eaten alive.

how many hunters get clean shots? impossible to know

there are (or were?) some endangered-ish animals that are maintained on ranches in texas and then people paying to “hunt” them funds the rest of the conservation effort. that’s ostensibly for the benefit of the species but i’ve probably read some scifi/horror stories about that setup.

I get where you’re coming from, but you’ve already pointed out why utilitarian pain-minimising strategy is flawed - it always assumes rational actors and avoids its place in the larger surrounding system of desires. Hunters aren’t perfect agents of solemn death, and animal attacks are also not guaranteed to be drawn-out gore baths where the deer is a powerless victim.

Since the entire affair is created to serve, and tainted by, the desire to make a profit, I don’t think the argument can be resolved either way without first eliminating that.

yeah breeding deer in particular doesn’t make any sense other than the profit motive, whether directly or for selling hunting licenses and moving various knock on economic activity to specific business or places instead of whatever people would buy instead if hunting was less available.
