How do you all feel about more of these monster tamer/catcher games coming out?

Is it about time for more of these games or are they just souless cash grabs?

Every genre has genuine effortfully made games and also cash grabs. I feel like many monster catchers get subjected to undeservedly high levels of criticism because some people seem to think that Nintendo should get to own the entire genre. Pickmon imo is definitely a cash grab but there are many other monster catchers that aren’t.

Palworld, Cassette Beasts, and Monster Sanctuary are my favourites so far outside Pokémon. Can’t really get into the new digimon as much as the others, it feels like a worse Persona 5.

I don’t play them but I am always happy when something happens and it pisses off Nintendo and Nintendo Fanboys/Fangirls.

I used to love Nintendo, but this isnt Iwata’s Nintendo anymore. Now they only care about money, which isnt a shock considering the CEO has a history in financial, but its still disappointing nonetheless.

Competition is good for consumers. Well, most of the time. I welcome the current monster capture trend so as long as it‘s not f2p gacha slop.

We have a billion FPS to games but there’s been little in this genre and Pokemon sells on nostalgia instead of quality. If it was a new IP today, it would flop. I’ve been such of Nintendo gaslighting everyone into thinking they invented any of it.

masuda did say in the beginning of swsh, that he was going to MAKE SLOP going forward, pretty much what it turned out he said. the latest iteration of pokemons is lazily designed.

I feel like it’s unstoppable for as long as Nintendo wants to keep their exclusivity. GabeN put it better: it’s a distribution issue, he was talking about piracy, but this is similar enough.

Honestly this one looks more like they put pokemon and palworld into a blender and call it a day, it’s pretty uninspiring. I think the only monster tamer i’m excited about is TemTem Pioneer, which theme seems to be closer to pokemon than palworld.

They are mostly uninspired Pokémon ripoffs: don’t get me wrong, not a pokefan here but objectively this subgenre is trash. I do love pocket monster green/blue, Pokémon gold/silver and Digimon World for psx (this one is basically pure management, love it). There are a couple of more recent ones which I’d like to try, like Palworld and Cassette Beasts.

Is this made by the creators of Palworld…? This looks exactly the same. Forgive me if that’s a dumb question

This is a natural state of the industry. For every big name series, you get a wave of [series]-likes. There are Mass Effect-likes and Call of Duty-likes and Disco Elysium-likes and Soulslikes and the list goes on and on.

Nintendo has had a stranglehold on creature catcher games for decades and the fact that there’s slop is only news as it relates to the palworld lawsuit. We’ve already had temtem and casette beasts and many, many more, for years. This is an anomaly, like soulslike games getting the amount of media attention they did, not in that there are copycats, but that we’re paying attention to the copy cats.
