You should comply with all entry, visa and other conditions of entry. The authorities in the U.S. set and enforce entry rules strictly. You may be liable to arrest or detention if you break the rules.

You may be arrested by men without badges in plain clothes for almost any reason… This is normal there. So perhaps just don’t go.

First time I ever went there (1997) I landed at Boston Logan Airport, and a guy in plain clothes, but with a gun, stopped everyone who was departing the plane and repeatedly yelled out “American citizens this way, foreigners line up against the wall!”.

I never once felt safe going there, and was always relieved when I got out alive. Decided a few years ago that I’ll never set foot in the US again.

I had to wait for 2 hours while my friend was questioned because his girlfriend mum lives in Greece and he’d gone there a few times. The worst border control in the world. Makes you feel like a criminal as soon as you arrive. Now it’s much worse. I won’t be going to the US until they grow the fuck up.

Edit: my first time in the US I cracked a joke at border control. No sense of humour at all. If I go under the current administration I’ll be seen right back because trump is a total piece of shit.

Went to a music show around 2022 and was in the middle of the crowd when they put an alert up on the big screen telling everyone to stay calm with the grateful dead bears and all I could think was “must be someone with a gun if they’re being so nonchalant about it”. No calls to evacuate, just “everyone chill out, we got another one”.

Didn’t really give me a warm and safe feeling, and have no interest to go back regardless of who is in power because of it.

But what actually happened? That is not how Americans react to an active shooter, no nonchalance about it.

I was deep in the crowd, and the way it was put up on the screen made it seem like a “don’t worry about it guys, we figured it out!” Before we knew what it was and I didn’t want to stick around to find out after the show.
