  • AI is riding the surface of a monster bubble and anyone gleefully waiting for the pop has no idea what that's going to do the US economy, and then everyone elses.

    All but 1% of US economic growth last year was AI development and speculation. Combine that with the US passing, for the first time, 200%+ on the Buffett Index and we are screwed.

    For reference, the Buffett Index is total stock market valuation vs. GDP. There is better than twice the dollars in the stock market than we produce in a year. The index was around 130% in 1929 and 2008.

  • I've always said 1910-1930 was the mechanical Cambrian explosion. We tried all kinds of ridiculous shit and the practical ideas evolved to stay. I can see AI going the same way.

  • Had a coworker who refused her new office because it had a circuit breaker panel in the wall. Her husband told her it caused cancer. I explained that any EM coming around that steel door was barely detectable and wasn't ionizing radiation. Pointed to a sunbeam on the floor, "That's cancer causing radiation."

    I know that sounds like I got all snotty about it, but I have social skills, explained it gently without condensation.

  • Male American here. Always had a hard time internalizing women's fear, hard to truly put myself in their shoes. My first wife really woke me.

    At the major hospital she worked at, the female nurses often needed escorts through the parking garage. There were alerts about shady characters hanging around. She clearly got roofied one night, and when her friends compared notes, it had happened to many of them at that same restaurant (a really nice one!).

    I was a small guy, little punker in the late 80s and early 90s. There were places we couldn't go or the skins or rednecks would get us. And yet that doesn't even begin to compare with the fear women must deal with.

    I've had a pretty fucking wild life, but I've never been stalked, drugged or raped.

  • That's a weapon that's giving you a false sense of security. Either carry a real weapon that you have trained hard to be competent with, or carry pepper spray. And yes, you still have educate yourself and practice with pepper stray. No weapon counts if it's not instantly available to attack with. No fumble fucking around trying to get your hand on it. Violence comes fast.

  • If you want cheap chickens and eggs for billions of humans, factory farming is a necessity. If you factory farm, there has to be a safe level of salmonella allowed, or nuke the whole facility over any infection. Also, if you factory farm, there will be wild price swings in chicken and eggs as factories are nuked for bird flu infections.

    But we have choices!

    a) Cook your fucking chicken and eggs.

    b) Don't eat chicken or eggs.

    c) Grow your own.

    And for my British friends:

    d) Boycott American chicken.
