    If you rotate it without editing the coin like done in this photo, it doesn’t actually look like what they describe at all…

        I’m gonna say the direction of the shadow helps sell the illusion of sun overhead

          This is exactly it. The shadows are slightly different based on the fact that the light source hasn’t rotated with the coin.

          This is a clearer image and it definitely helps pick out the little details.
