Always loved the whole “I don’t tip because I think you should get a living wage” thing
It’s like, buddy, the people who own the restaurant aren’t going to see you not tipping and go “Boy, i should pay my workers more!” all you’re doing is stiffing someone who’s already getting stiffed
It’s accelerationism, but specifically for unionising restaurants
Stg people just think up something the most obnoxious man of all time would do and attribute it to Trotsky. This has to be the only explanation lol
There is absolutely no way the patron saint of arrogant math professors with zero social skills assembled the red army wtf
I also don’t think this story is true because
-
Trotsky only lived in New York for 2 months, so he probably did not have enough time to develop a “favorite” restaurant
-
Trotsky says in his autobiography that he spent almost all of his waking hours reading, writing, and going to meetings about socialism. This was during WWI and all the socialist parties were in disarray and chaos about what to do next.
-
Trotsky barely spoke English (his main languages were Ukrainian, Russian, French, and German, and he was literally trying to learn English on the boat ride over to New York), so the idea of him trying to “convince other patrons” to not tip in broken English seems very silly to me.
Trotsky only lived in New York for 2 months, so he probably did not have enough time to develop a “favorite” restaurant
Counterpoint: Having a favorite restaurant after less than 2 months is very much a thing someone as annoying as trotsky would do. It’s very much a “dumbass who just moved to NYC”-thing

after some hemming and hawing over this because I was raised in a non-tipping country, i’ve decided that the move is to tip the waiter directly before/when you ask for the bill, and then immediately leave without paying
I struggled with it before, because on the one hand tipping perpetuates the tipping-system, but on the other not tipping is a shitty thing to do.
I ended up realising I was doing accelerationism but only for tipping and also I participate in the system everywhere else, so why should tipping be excluded? If I go to work and keep my money in a bank and vote and own a car and pay my taxes and watch tv and go to the movies and buy sugary sweets made by slave labour and get fancy technological treats and doo-dads, even though I acknowledge they’re bad… Why would I not tip?
I don’t even have to go that far, just… If I go to a restaurant where tipping is expected, why would I not tip? If I am going to take a stance, then I gotta not go at all, right? It’s such a bullshit excuse.
Here’s a tip, get a real economic system!
good sir did you just grace us with Original content

It’s from From the Wikipedia article for “Jewish dairy restaurant”
Truly the Larry David of revolutionaries
All servers should be allowed to one customer per year, it’d keep diners on their toes.
Bring back the draft, but for working in the service industry. Everyone should have to do a tour of duty (6 months working in the education/childcare system & 6 months working in the service industry). You can opt in for an additional 6 months to work as a waiter/cook/retail/whichever you didn’t work on the tour and you’ll get an automatic medal of honor.
Bring back the Khmer Rouge, but instead of going to the fields we will make people serve “coffee” (milkshakes)
Being expected to tip my server? Stalinism
Being rude to me because I don’t tip? Stalinism
Spilling hot soup in my lap? Stalinism
Unlimited hot soup on the lap of Trotsky!
trotsky was such an asshole of a guy
lmao this can’t be true
idk about the story but the fact trotsky thought tipping is bad is real
I mean, he wasn’t wrong about that
being an asshole about tips is bad actually
Not what he was saying
Wild how people on here go miles out of their way to read a comment in the least generous way possible
yeah yeah
What about my response gave you the impression that I think not tipping a worker is good? Are you saying you think workers should be made to rely on tips?
sorry dude you said it was a bad thing and i just misunderstood
What if Stalin didn’t have anything to do with the murder?
