Sadly, it only has 8 inputs onboard, expandable to 16 with an outboard mic preamp module. And for some reason the SPDIF connection for that and the clock sync port count as “inputs” for marketing purposes.
This interface is also not long for this world, because it’s the last thing keeping me on Windows 11. There are Linux audio drivers for it, but the I/O routing software requires Windows with native USB connectivity for this generation, and there’s no equivalent out there. (I have a Gen3 version lined up to replace it, and that does have full Linux support. Also eight Pad switches.)
Any particular reason why you go for gen 3 instead of 4? Or is it just the price difference?
Price difference, mainly. I found a used Gen 3 for dirt cheap because Guitar Center had it listed as the wrong version, although I still would have been OK with a Gen 2.
Sound quality hasn’t changed across generations; it’s mostly just changes to the preamps. Gen 1 is freaking quiet, and you need a lot of boost for dynamic mics. Later versions are better about it.
