Really? I remember webp support being dicey like a decade ago but most stuff I use supports it now.

Okay yes, I’ve played audio through it before too. It seems like it’s worse at audio than a dedicated player like Strawberry though, and that it’d be worse at still images than dedicated image viewers like gwenview? Not to nitpick your software choices or whatever. I guess I just wonder what desktop environment you use that doesn’t have some alternative by default.
Also to be pedantic about it, it does say media player, and you don’t really play an image

The videolan site doesn’t list image view as part of its feature set though, so I’m guessing the incomplete support comes from it being derivative of the video formats.

The main culprit is Google because it previously removed support from Chrome, essentially forcing webp as the de facto standard, but afaik they have re-added support for it recently. Firefox also added support, so it’s a question of sites supporting it. It’s been a while since I checked on GitHub, but Lemmy should support if I’m not mistaken, so it would be cool if Hexbear enabled support for that, would help a lot since this site unfortunately gets rather slow for me quite often.
Personally I have moved almost all images on my PC to jxl, unfortunately some stuff I still need to keep in jpg because of the lack of support.
Since it’s so new it seems like google’s bullshit really struck a blow to JXL adoption. Doesn’t really explain why AVIF support is poor, too, though.
For a lot of things I’m fine to use plain jpeg, but I had a PNG come out to 35mb recently which hurt. Would also be rad to have my phone’s camera save to JXL, not that foss android galleries support it…
Definetely, but to be fair adoption of new formats tend to take time anyway, so since support for it on browsers are so recent, it will take time for sites to use, I can only hope adoption follows, poses like this are great for raising awareness.
I decided to move images on my PC to jxl because KDE has pretty good support for it, Gwenview, Spectacle and KDE’s wallpaper manager all support it.

You would think, but if you fire up an Android phone it seems to be roll of the dice whether its gallery apps or whatever will parse it. Fossify Gallery fails out on both JXL and AVIF.

I hate that software companies are so quick to push useless trash like unwanted UI updates or AI integration, but then take years to implement simple turnkey things.
I am fully convinced these days that capitalism cannot do standards adoption, for many reasons. I hate it a lot!
I’m not exactly one who keeps up to date with new file extension information, so I have no idea but what makes them vastly superior? Compression? Data use? Visual quality?
Is it a case of the xkcd joke about creating a new standard? Is this just a case of wanting to use new and hot when old and busted works just fine?
JPEG-XL is superior to jpeg in every way. It has a cool feature where it can do a partial decompression where it will initially load an image a low res and progressively load the remaining data.
I think webp became the newer de facto standard because of Chrome’s (Google) browser dominance.
Why can’t webp and jxl/avif coexist… jpeg and png coexisted…

All of the above. See jpegxl.info, but they’ll output vastly superior image quality at the same size as old jpeg or way smaller files at the same quality. They also feature cool progressive loading for internet purposes. JPEG is from 1992.
I have no fuckin idea why adoption of these is so poor. AVIF is from 2018 and JXL is from 2021, so it’s galling to still be staring down vanilla jpegs and fuckin webp’s…
