The reason various “betterment” programs exist in imperial core prisons is specifically to counteract and undermine left organizing within them. Someone that is “reducing their sentence” by working at a fast food joint 80% of their waking hours is hard to organize. Someone that thinks they are getting something like a college education out of the situation doesn’t want to disrupt it.
