lmao no he completely killed his supporters, barely anyone even cares about him. He is a literal nobody already. And I’m not saying this as a biased person, the fact that Orbán decided to not even go to parliament completely lost any respect from people. The other category of his “supporters” were poor and uneducated people who dont even care and just follow the winner.

Possible, but I think he is Hitler in the bunker at this point that still thinks Steiner can come support him in retaking Berlin. By all reports, the entire head of Fidesz was completely and totally blindsided by the loss, they had built so many yes men around them the idea was inconceivable. I think most have realized the music has stopped now, but Orban still hasn’t. I think he still imagines himself leading a glorious comeback. I think him being too egotistical to leave means Fidesz is going to die as everyone else leaves the sinking ship… unfortunately, the most likely lifeboat for them to scurry to is… Mi Hazank, which has already been courting them and is a much more explicitly hard right party. So Hungary may go from having a center right kleptocrat with a milquetoast center left opposition that was toothless, to having a center right [question mark on politics beyond that] with a hard right opposition.

Could be totally wrong, maybe he just steps away and Fidesz remains the core opposition for the right, but there are concerning signs that won’t be the case.

One reason that could justify this approach is the deliberate abuse of the political system by right-wing enemies of democracy: Even back in the Weimar Republic, and now in many Western countries, the goal of the right wing is not to eliminate democracy from the outside but to undermine it from within. This is also the case in Hungary and, for example, Poland. (In Poland, the current government’s agenda is severely constrained by the president, who is an ally of the right-wing populist PiS party. As a result, many decisions made by the previous government cannot be reversed because they do not align with the president’s ideology.)

It follows that enemies of democracy are far more dangerous when in office than when they are not, because they can use their power to hold the system hostage.

Whether Peter Magyar is truly a genuine alternative to Orbán or whether he now intends to reshape the system to his own advantage remains to be seen; however, the chance of real change will in any case be smaller if the Orbán clique retains access to various offices and positions of power even after the election.
