I don’t think it should be legal to anonymously create a facebook, instagram,X,tiktok, reddit account. Without having accounts traceable back to an identify illegal behavior never stops and the person is never held accountable. Online crimes but are unenforceable as long as anonymity is permitted. There is little to no good that comes from anonymously creating an account compared to the massive amounts of harm. Implementing restrictions does not affect 99.99% of the population and only filters out the tiny minority of people who represent a disproportional amount of harm on the platform.

I still think anonymity should be permitted on tor, i2p and less popular sites.

No not at all they are just so small no one uses them. Most websites block their traffic so there is little harm in having users be anonymous there as long as they cant go from there to mainstream platforms to shit them up.

99.99% of people posting those today are not anonymous. So do you worry that in 5 years they will all be arrested?

        I don’t, but they should.

I started worrying in 2001. Since then, I’ve rabidly guarded my privacy in preparation for the day fascism would take over this country. The day is today. I’ll be fine, but a lot of people will soon realize they shouldn’t’ve let surveillance capitalism track them everywhere for years, and that they did have something to hide after all…

In democracies laws are not applied retroactively and in Fascist Regime they dont need laws to arrest you.

Do you think there is a problem with bad actors on the internet? Im not sure if people disagree that the problem exists or disagree on the solution.

there are bad actors in life. And its a problem. But you don’t want to live in a totalitarian state for fear of them. You don’t want to give up liberty and freedom for safety.

Bad actors in life are tied to their real identity if you catch them and imprison them they do not continue to commit the crime. We dont allow someone to walk into a store assault someone and then come back with a different change of clothes and do it again.

But online the can continue to commit the crime over and over with no consequences. Its not totalitarian to know who people are.

CCTV does reduce crime and we do not have a problem of it being used against normal people. So even if it were the same you’re saying my solution would be an effective one at curbing the issue with little to no downsides except theoretical ones that upset internet schizo’s.

They are different because the robber with the mask can rob a store and when they are caught(banned) they do not come back. For internet stuff they can rob the store get banned and instantly make new accounts and do this at scale all with zero risk.

Well, I wouldn’t go as far as to make it illegal to create an anonymous account, but my anecdotal evidence says that if you want people to behave and for those who don’t to actually stay away after they’ve been kicked, then part of the answer is an account tied to your actual identity (admins have to know, not necessarily users) and a subscription-based bussines model so the users actually have skin in the game and the platform doesn’t need to fund itself with ads, thus making users the product.

I’m a paid member on such a platform and you genuinely can’t find people acting like obnoxious jerks there even if you go looking. Here finding one takes 20 seconds.

The reason I support anonymity is actually because I’ve experienced the results of not having it in the real world. As someone raised agnostic in the middle of the bible belt during the gestation of what is now open Christian nationalism, I got to see exactly what happens when you aren’t part of the in group. Starting in the 3rd grade, gangs of kids would make a game out of keeping me away from the playground equipment. To allow me to play there would taint it with my sin. Group projects would have me abandoned or assigned to work with the teacher. This persisted through highschool where I was barred from joining 4H because I wouldn’t pray before every meeting and a teacher failed my participation grade every day for not doing the pledge of allegiance. A decision supported by the SuperIntendent.

Now the same people that prayed around the flagpole in the mornings to prepare for a day of telling me I deserve to burn in hell are the people who dictate the highest law of the nation. It’s luck enough that I’m not also trans or brown became those are the people they picked to destroy first. That doesn’t mean they’ll stop there. The death of internet anonymity means that when the powers that be run a kangaroo court before my execution, this post will be evidence of my commitment to sin and irredeemability in the eyes of Trump’s God.

I truthfully want a world where anonymity is pointless, but until we live in a world where those in power are without any malice it simply isn’t safe. I hold no delusions that my anonymity currently is any actual protection either, but until it’s gone it’s another hoop they must jump through to get to me and at the very least I can die being petty and difficult.

          It has very much.

If they fascist or communist or islamist or billionaire or whatever government you frightens most KNOWS you are a Dissident, you will be prosecuted.

So how to prevent that? If possible just make anonymity the Standard.

The problematic time is the transition from democracy to dictatorship.

And if the Data wouldnt just be saved, it wouldnt exist and this couldnt be used against oneself.
