The toei anime is a garbage capitalist rent-seeking adaptation whose pacing issues, over the top fan service, poor animation and censorship makes it unbearable to watch. It’s gotten to a point where the anime episodes will catch up to the manga chapters.
The live action is a spin-off series that is diverging more and more from the source material and trying to be its own thing and the new anime remake has only a few character sheets and concept art.
So it’s really not that bad.
I actually think the live action is my favourite adaptation. It has zero filler, it’s much more international with varied nationalities and skin colours, it doesn’t have the stupid misogyny, it just feels way more up to date.
Live action Sanji is just
he’s actually charming and corny at the same time without coming off like his name can be Ctrl-F’d in the Epstein files.A lot of plot beats are skipped over but the ability to just enjoy one piece without having to have your problematic blinders up makes up for it (and they actually show people being killed!)

I thought people’s feelings were generally positive towards the anime, hence the popularity.
I’m gonna be real, I read One Piece until shortly after they recruited Usopp, got told I was like 1/100th of the way through what had already been published and would have to wait years more for it to get done and decided I would wait for it to finish and see if it was worth reading at that point. So I don’t really have a vested interest
the anime is very popular but then so are dragon ball z and naruto still. if you’re ever interested in giving it a shot, a highly recommend the fan edit called One Pace that cuts down filler scenes and content to pretty much what’s in the manga. much closer to the experience of reading it.
The anime has probably been the sole reason why One Piece isn’t even more popular. The “One Piece is too long” meme comes primarily from the anime and not the manga since readers can control their pace. It’s perfectly possible to go from chapter 1 to present day serialization in about 3 months (which is nearly 30 years of weekly serialization) from the manga but the anime will waste 40-50% of each episode on filler content. The toei anime is also extremely exploitative of its femme characters far beyond even Oda’s most problematic panels.

toei sanji is like borderline under the jail amounts of being a predator, it’s unreal how dirty they do him in the name of fan service and femme exploitation.
damn this makes me really curious about the manga experience bc i find nearly every scene with sanji damn near intolerable and routinely feel he is the worst character in the show despite having the on paper potential to be at least somewhat entertaining
I’m a manga-only and Sanji is still fucking awful, to the point that I actually can’t imagine how the show could make him worse.
well imagine if he also never did redeeming things and also gets his ass kicked like twice as often, and then you’ve got what you’d think of anime sanji.
he still definitely has some…less savory moments and drives, oda tends to give him the “wants invisibility to leer at women secretly” trait. some of that even is traceable to a particular editor that oda had. but a lot more of the time, moments that toei decided to depict as him being lurid or even interested in a child (jewelry bonney) has a completely different tone of protection and personal honor. even some of his fights that toei makes seem like sanji is getting wailed on feel completely different in the manga. they amp up all his worst aspects to 11 and seem to erase most of his redeeming qualities.
Phil Lord is a gusano, he deserves nothing but scorn, even if he helped to make the best Spider-Man movie
