I made the trellis removable because they’re ass to install and I figured it’s the flimsiest part of the build.
I did two coats of tung oil with about 24hrs to dry between. I used like 300ml of oil on this thirsty mf because pallet wood is dryyyyy af so a third or fourth coat wouldn’t have made it. The planter box and shelf are also coated in two layers of polyurethane shed sealant, though thinking about it now I might have just sealed out the air that the oil needs to cure
The feet are a little brittle because it’s end grain against the ground, but they’re reinforced with glue and a frickload of timber screws that came in a hyper masculine packaging… which means it’s invincible, right?
Nice! Been thinking about doing something like this myself.
I went a little overboard with engineering it for sake of wanting to design it all by hand, but for my first big project it’s been awesome for learning!
Here’s some progress pics of how I built it; might be useful if you’re looking for ideas :)

Huge caveat that I have no idea if this will hold the ~80kg of soil it’ll have eventually…
Very nice.

Lol, fingers crossed!
Very nice. I like the Tung oil on it. I used to build stuff w reclaimed pallet lumber whenever I had the time. I noticed over time the quality of lumber has gotten worse, at least where I am. I used to come across red oak, white oak, maple. I think I’ve even come across mesquite. Now i see mostly cheap yellow pine or the blue Chep pallets. Maybe other folks are into pallet furnishings too and they’re just getting grabbed up before I come across them.
The quality of the wood between pallets is pretty wild. I think some of it is how standardized pallets are mass produced by centralized organisations like EPAL, which were super soft and rough cut pieces over the larger “heavy duty” pallets that had a few pieces of impressively-hard wood. Granted, I can’t tell different wood apart as I’m very amateurish.
The big pallets had some beautiful planks. The bottom-front board with that beautiful grain pattern was one, and the vertical piece on the right-inside took a sanding and oil like a champ! I’d wish I got more of that harder wood, but it was pretty easy to split if you weren’t careful.
Still, it’s cheap (literally free from the nearby college for me!) and means I can be more adventurous and break shit while I learn. Can’t wait to get some nicer plywoods/hardwoods!
Looks great!
thanks!!!🙂↕️
I hope you paid Tung an equitable wage for his oiling work
Tung is a wobbly and only had modest demands; he only wants the world.
