    In general, Western Europe is much warmer than the equivalent latitudes in eastern North America. The Gulf Stream current pulls large amounts of warm water from the Caribbean up to Western Europe and generally keeps the area fairly warm, by way of sheer thermal mass. Southern France is about the same latitude as Boston. Edinburgh is further north than most of Newfoundland and Labrador.
