Looking at the date of the article, apparently this was released in March of 2025, but I had not heard of it, so it’s good to once in a while see older articles like this resurface again.
To @irotsoma@lemmy.world’s point, could a phone app be made to :
- Record tower eNBID, signal strength, and GPS coordinates on a regular basis
- If, near a given GPS coordinate, eNBID is now different, or the same with significantly changed strength, alert the user
Theoretically this would allow a device to notify on a new “tower”/etc. Oddly enough I’m going to be around a bunch of telecom people in the coming weeks, so I might ask about this.
Still pretty limited set of supported devices, but it’s not really mean to be a defensive tool. Would be nice if this results in a way to detect and prevent your device from connecting to them, someday.
