  • I mean, the real reasons have nothing to do with productivity since productivity actually increased with remote and hybrid work. The real reason is they aren't doing as well as expected, partly due to some recent problems, and have a many investments in commercial real estate and they need a boom to make some quick profit for shareholders.

    Oh, and to appease Elan...

  • I mean, no surprise. All of his policies last time were for the wealthy. But more importantly, all of the things Elan is planning to cut are going to hurt the poor and they didn't say they were going to give any of that money to people, just that they were going to cut the deficit. If running the country like a business, you never cut income, even if you cut expenses. Businesses with monopolies keep the profits from reduced expenses, not pass them on to customers, that would be dumb.

  • I don't get the logic of cutting off contributions of any kind unless they were actively sabotaging the projector something. Seems like that just makes the fork basically a guarantee. And in open source, a fork that discourages community is always going to be at a disadvantage.

  • That is only an issue in very small grids that are entirely renewables in one location. And the impact of AI on the grid has been much more problematic than any renewable sources because it's localized and its is sudden spikes in usage whereas spikes in generation can be mitigated with battery and capacitor tech. Spikes at the usage side need to either be mitigated by the user or the grid has to implement mitigation at just those locations which is more difficult to plan for.

  • He's just trying to expose people who are LGBTQ+ so they'll get murdered by far right extremists. Just like government officials used to purposely expose people with AIDS in the 80s or black people moving into traditionally white neighborhoods before that.

  • As long as that money is spent on public transit improvements, I think it's a great idea for many large cities.

  • We took profit for decades from letting our infrastructure decay. Now we still want that same amount of profit, so you have to pay more for us to fix all the problems that should have been fixed with that profit money in the past.

  • Trump Jr. already started after he got run out after a day though he said je was staying for the week originally. Now He's saying how much they love Trump there.

  • It's important to security because he wants to tear down the alliances with Canada and NATO. But the primary reason is to cash in on the natural resources without worrying about environmental laws if it's an occupied territory.

  • Denmark is a NATO country along with France. They'd be forced to intercede along with most of the rest of Eastern Europe.

  • Well he is planning to leave NATO, so it will be the US against NATO. Sure the US has more weapons now, but unless billionaires start paying taxes instead of taking them, there's no way the US could maintain a sustained war against all of NATO. So the US would need to ally with Russia and even that might not be enough, so probably China too. That or China will take advantage of the chaos and turn on Trump since he and Xi aren't as friendly as Putin. It would be an interesting, if disastrous time to be alive.

  • In a decade or two, when cancer rates skyrocket and sinkholes start swallowing buildings, I'm sure they won't exist anymore to suffer any consequences. Until then, I hope people enjoy their regulation-less sludge tunnels.

  • And that's why he wants to legitimize Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He wants his own empire.

  • 4k thing may not be Netflix itself. There's a ton of DRM that has to be working just right built into a lot of hardware and software. Many things can cause it to have issues and it's designed to break if there is anything it considers abnormal. Problem is that it's kinda, sorta new and hardware can't be updated. Same issues happened with 1080p at the time. My PS3 HDMI port broke multiple times during warranty and then I gave up after it expired. Just the slight distortion caused by the defect made the TV and all the other devices decide it was being used to pirate content and so they refused to work. These days the devices are more stable and the media industry has stopped aggressively enforcing the DRM to be so aggressive. But they still are doing it with 4K. Any little bug in a driver, software, or hardware firmware and it falls back to 720p or 1080p if you're lucky.

  • Doesn't need to be checked out to read it. I used to go to the public library and read for hours. Not in school, but the city library I mean. I could imagine a kid that doesn't want to go home or has free study periods reading books on their own.

  • It's a "book of wisdom" like "She lusted after lovers with genitals as large as a donkey’s and emissions like those of a horse." Nothing sexual there...🤣

  • OK, expert maybe was the wrong word, but it was part of his job. And that the mistake he made was obvious to anyone with basic understanding of heat and how things like gasoline burns. It's a simple concept that could have easily have been solved by simply opening the top and using the fireworks to trigger things or lots of other ways to do what he said was going to happen.

  • Many of us I the US want to come there, and we're willing to contribute, but the barriers of entry are too high. I likely won't be able to until after retirement and that probably won't be until I'm too old to move. And I have a lot to contribute if I could find a way to get on my feet. The US doesn't allow for building enough wealth to start a business right out of the gate, unless you're already born wealthy or get lucky and are willing to be exploitative, and in that case I could use a different visa to get in. Immigration isn't all welfare cases and even with those who do need that help having a system in place to allow then to contribute while they get on their feet would benefit everyone. Dump the idea that you need to be extreme capitalists like the US and start embracing the people who need help to get started and most of them will contribute significantly as they will be so prideful of the place that took them in.

  • "Not a terrorist attack" -- um detonating a bomb in a public place to get attention for a political purpose is basically the definition of a terror attack. Using fear to stop your opponents from opposing your favored political despots. Not to mention that even if there weren't many injuries, the people who breathed the fumes from those batteries burning likely will develop cancer including the firefighters. And the cost of cleaning that up falls on the people who live there. Not exactly a beneficial act.

The media treating this as a patriotic act is just going to encourage copycats. And this guy was a bomb expert, but failed to realize that the temperatures he was creating would vaporize the fireworks, not shoot them off. If an expert could make that kind of mistake, just imagine the mistakes that will be made by the copycats. Look forward to many casualties from "patriotic" terrorists.
