NH here. Glad to see this pass. I didn’t have an issue with my vasectomy years ago but all the women I know who have wanted sterilization always had to deal with nosy fucking doctors and nurses who thought they knew what was best for them. I know I’d get fucking irritated if I had to argue with the urologist that I wasn’t going to change my mind and I don’t find the idea of fatherhood magical.

This is excellent, so I’m sure Republicans will sue and the Supreme Court will overrule it, but let’s enjoy a temporary smile: People who choose not to have children will, at least for now and at least in New Hampshire, be allowed to choose not to have children.

State Republicans passed it. The NH legislature is full of crazies, and the governor is a right-wing piece of shit. I don’t even know why she decided to pass this of all things when she’s been vetoing all the other good bills.

In principle, I don’t like the government forcing the issue, but the attitudes of some of these doctors are bizarre. Sure, make sure the patient is sane, sober, and calm, but otherwise? WTF makes them think they should have an opinion?

Not in the US, but a doctor quizzed me, told me that ladies have loads of easier, safer, reversible options, and was I really REALLY sure.

I got put on a waiting list eventually.

It shouldn’t be all that difficult to get this done, but it was. As a male in my 30s living in Texass, you would have thought I was asking them to murder someone. I had my 3 children, which was 3 more than I ever wanted. I love them, but I never wanted kids. And my doctor tells me I’m too young to stop. Legit 60 days I had to wait to “prove” I was still intending to get unreversible (at the time) surgery.

The Y Factor in Houston did it first appointment. Simple 30 second quiz beforehand. “What are you here for? What will that do? That’s right, no more babies. Anything I need to know? Alright lay down here.”

“A doctor should not withhold your needed treatment because the doctor doesn’t like the idea that you decided not to have kids or don’t want any more kids,”

Look, it sounds weird but have had this from a doctor before. Partner gor a “lecture” about being at the prime age for having children, so shouldn’t be using birth control.

This, of course, has the most confusing logic:

A: “I do not want thing to happen.”
B: “But then thing will not happen.”

That… seems odd; vasectomies and hysterectomies are a specialty; there’s no way I’d want a GP or even a brain surgeon sterilizing me. And as far as specialists in the field go… are there really some that will refuse a consenting adult of sound mind?

read the article. please. it’s not about forcing any ol’ doctor to perform these procedures… it’s about when a doctor denies the procedures for their own personal reasons and opinions–even when it’s a treatment option for something else. someone very near and dear to me had to go to a different state because she’s (“only”) in her 20s and nobody around here would even consider it–even though another pregnancy might kill her.

Religious nutters and male chauvinists don’t take well to the idea of taking away the childbearing capacity of a broodmare potential mother.

Hell some of them don’t like the idea of guys being sterile, I’ve made jokes about how I’m probably sterile because of the abuse I put my body through and they act like I just said I spiked an infant into a rock.
