I know a lot of liberal websites are pretty bad, but RationalWiki has a special kind of ick factor to me, like if I go back to it I will fall back into the darkness that I was originally in (I used to read it a lot).

“reason” “logic” and “truth” are all part of those hoity toity metaphysical cudgels the fascists can appeal to when they want to appear superior in some way. it’s what appealed to so many new atheists before they figured being trad catholics was more suitable for bigoted filth.

I’m reminded of a post I made under an old account about the shift in how conservatives attacked gay people pre-Obergefell to how they attacked trans people when they became the target of the moment. They largely used the language of Christianity and sin against gay people, whereas the propaganda against trans people is couched in the language of science, with constant talk about chromosomes and skeletal shapes.

There is a similarity there, where both the Bible and science aren’t treated as things to be interpreted, or considered in the full. Rather, they take the narrowest parts useful to their agenda, ignore the inconvenient parts, and then treat that narrow bit as absolute, authoritative Truth.

It’s probably because Wikipedia already has that smugly incorrect liberal sort of vibe to it, so something that is trying to do that but more is automatically going to be significantly more icky

I used to love that site, but any time I’ve visited it again in the past several years gives me that same vibe.

Oh wow, you have the intellectual high ground on young earth creationists. Wow, you must be a genius!
