They did not respect, or care about, the actual facts of the matter, except to the extent that they viewed such facts with hostility.

The thing I most remember about Bill Maher is him being a smug asshole condescending to people who opposed the genocide of Palestinians.

Honestly torture is something I’m opposed to on principle, and it’s something I have a visceral reaction to from the cultural memory of seeing how large portions of the US collectively shrugged off or even celebrated Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay. Yeah I know there’s no moral equivalency to be had between “guy the US maybe thinks was a terrorist” and “literal SS officer,” but the reflex runs deep.

At the same time, though, I find it absurd to treat “this handful of soldiers (out of millions) took out their anger on one of the perpetrators of the worst crimes imaginable against them” as though it were a meaningful condemnation of the Red Army, and even if it were proven to be true, my honest reaction would be a shrug.

Did that actually happen? It always sounded made up to me.

I’ve noticed that those two things often seem to go together, and I’m not surprised. The commonality is that neither children nor animals can be genuine partners, only victims of exploitation.

I’m reminded of a post I made under an old account about the shift in how conservatives attacked gay people pre-Obergefell to how they attacked trans people when they became the target of the moment. They largely used the language of Christianity and sin against gay people, whereas the propaganda against trans people is couched in the language of science, with constant talk about chromosomes and skeletal shapes.

I remember being legitimately blown away the first few times I saw a European pivot seamlessly from (rightly) condemning American racism to full-bore Hitlerian antiziganism.
