The leaders of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland signed a joint declaration on 14 September, asserting their nations’ right to self-determination and calling for constitutional change that could lead to independence referendums and the breakup of the UK.

The declaration stated that, “No Westminster government has the right to block democracy or undermine the principle that our people will decide their own future.”

“We recognize that our parties have different constitutional positions and that each nation will determine its own future in its own way and in its own time,” it added.

The declaration was signed by John Swinney of the Scottish National Party (SNP) in Scotland, Rhun ap Iorwerth of Plaid Cymru in Wales, and Michelle O’Neill of Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland during a meeting in Cardiff on Monday.
