John Mearsheimer said something recently which (although dismaying) seemed pretty logical to me: while this might take the pressure off of China in the short term, if the Iran boondoggle ends with the US pulling out of the Persian Gulf, those resources will get reallocated to East Asia, thus leading to increased pressure in the long term.
