The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has, for the first time, officially reported on the deaths of citizens from countries that fought on Russia’s side against Ukraine. The ministry noted that 459 Peruvians joined the Russian army, 11 of whom were killed, 114 are considered missing in action, and three more were taken prisoner by Ukrainian forces. This was reported by EFE (links to article in Spanish).

It is known that the Peruvian government had not previously reported on citizens who died while serving with the Russian occupying forces.

The Foreign Ministry also stated that four more Peruvians have returned home. The ministry added that they had fled forced conscription into the war against Ukraine and found themselves in a vulnerable situation in Russia.

A total of 31 Peruvian citizens were evacuated from Russia; 28 of them returned home, while three others chose to remain in Europe.

At the same time, diplomats urged their citizens not to trust fake job offers, as these could lead them into criminal human trafficking networks. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminded citizens that permission from the Peruvian government is required to serve in the armed forces of another country.

A $20,000 “welcome bonus” that was never paid: how a Colombia-registered recruiter sent Peruvians into Russia’s war

… First, recruiters promise foreigners high salaries, signing bonuses, and “rear” or civilian positions. Debt traps and threats of deportation are also used. They lure people even through video games and chats. Once in Russia, recruits are forced to sign contracts, after which their documents are confiscated to keep them at the front. The contracts are often written in Russian, a language the foreign recruit does not understand …

I just had to freshen up my memory about the government in Peru. Turns out they just got a new right wing populist president a few days ago. Their government has been a mess for a while though, wishing them luck in further protests.

So what has that to do with the fact that Russia lures Peruvians to its military and sent them to the meat grinder?

I don’t follow news from Peru very well, and I thought it was an interesting piece of context. I don’t have dots to connect for you, it just interested me.
