I had a really vivid dream a few days ago where the plot was that humans have started living in frostpunk-like city-states in the Antarctic Peninsula because the other six continents have become uninhabitable due to nuclear war. As a result of the war, there was mass migration to anywhere there isn’t radiation, which was mostly the southern tip of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula (since the rest of Antarctica is even colder and less habitable). The cities are fully indoors, with “streets” just being tunnels between different subsections of the city, and they are powered by nuclear reactors because in the dream that was the only technology that survived through the war and is still viable with the climate of the antarctic. I was wondering if and how I can expand on this and make it into a proper setting for something, and thought this might be a good place to ask

Oh wow, I wasn’t expecting there to be an actual place based on this. I’ll have to think about ways those issues would be alleviated in-universe

I think it’d be interesting to set in 100 years when it has thawed, but socialism is also victorious. It’s a socialist-directed science colony on truly new, empty land.

I do like the idea of it being set a while after the apocalypse happens, but I think the frozen setting is essential to the mood of the story. I’d imagined the politics to be similar to the USSR before the start of the cold war (although my knowledge of the USSR is pretty limited, so bear with me if i’m wrong). There needs to be a planned economy with an “authoritarian” leader and government, because without it they wouldn’t be able to withstand the harsh environment and the challenges it poses, like managing resources in a chronic shortage of, well, everything.

your thermals will melt your foundation (unless you think like without ice sheet, but then it’s not so different?)

How so, also given how destroyed the environment would be from the explosions? Plus, the reason behind the apocalypse could be a combination of things. I had also thought of extreme climate change, making the tropics borderline uninhabitable, but realized this might make it so that the peninsula is no longer frozen
