insane little person walking back and forth

Website

They

  • IT'S DIFFERENT M'KAY

  • I hate how Apple users feel the need to call their computer by the brand. It really makes me cringe.

    It is called "a computer"

    Maybe "PC"

"box" if you really have to flex that UNIX

They should treat their computers less like a sports car and more like a van

Only if there was a alternative...

    Capitalism kills.

  • 👏if you want to censor something, don't write it 👏

Writing is a tool for communication. Writing something implies your desire to communicate it.

This might land a little controversial but I'll go one step further and say you should not censor racial/homophobic slurs if they are not being used for offense. For example:

"I hate my cop neighbor, I heard he called my niece a f***ot"

(I obviously censored it here because lemmy prob. has a filter for that shit.)

In this sentence, I am not attacking anyone and I am simply trying to communicate a bad act done by somebody else. The message of the sentence is not homophobic in any way and me censoring the nasty word definitely didn't change anything about the message. People can still hear that word loud and clear.

So if you think including the word would be offensive for people, and think it's not a crucial part of your message, simply don't write it.

"I hate my cop neighbor, I heard he called my niece a homophobic slur"

There you go. You did not communicate the word f***ot and your audience did not receive it. A successful example of self censorship

  • I am 20. I hate algospeak so bad. But "ahh" kinda stuck in my tongue

"ahh" feels like the sound you'd make when you try to say "ass" quickly

I feel like "ass" and "ahh" conveys different feelings so I use them interchangably. But I still cringe a bit because "ahh" originated from algospeak

  • mirrors are getting paid by Rothschild to show me ugly

  • What is the modern alternative for decentralized, eco friendly money?

I know monero is praised a lot by the people of penguin but that one also requires mining.

  • bell labs is pretty close to far beyond alien civilization technology though...

  • Oh I completely forgot about this

I was halfway through designing a fake CDE-styled login page, then I failed to fit it in mobile browsers and then I got distracted.

The file is still sitting there https://aesistril.com/login.html

So initially, this login.html was the homepage and home.html was to be reached by clicking a button on this page.

    When I scratched the login page idea, I just renamed index.html -> login.html and then linked home.html -> index.html

Well I could've just renamed home.html but I am way too UNIX-headed for that. Lets say its a symbolic link so I could change the homepage easily in the future

  • If you want something boring, use a static site generator like Hugo. But you already said you found them restrictive

I built my previous site with Ruby Mustache, an extremely simple templating thing. But I abandoned it because it got hard to maintain.

My current site is plain HTML and CSS. This is the way if you want ultimate customizability. It works pretty good and I would recommend it. Simpler is better.

Remember: Having a website was one of the ways people communicated on the net back in the day. HTML and CSS are intended to be used by regular people, they are very easy to learn. Don't be scared of them

There is no decent WYSIWYG html editor i know of

  • Imperative stoneagers getting an old MacBook from somewhere and going "huh, I guess its UNIX" is probably true though

  • Yeah let's get rid of science communication altogether

I am sure everything will be just fine

  • I know this is a different game but it reminded me of Galacticcraft moon

I still love mods from that era. New ones are just missing the sandbox experience. Except Create, they know how to make a good sandbox

  • I'm gonna say posting screenshots is kind of parallel to the purpose of this place. Lemmy is an aggregator, a platform where content from other sites is linked/reposted.

Original content is still important, as without them, the website would die in a few weeks. But we should not ignore the value "crossposted" stuff adds to this place. I read a lot of great, original stories under the thread shown in your screenshot.

!science_memes@mander.xyz is a perfect example of this. It is filled with unoriginal content and screenshots but I genuinely learned more stuff in the comment section of that community compared to "serious" science communities in other platforms. That also has something to do with the quality of fediverse users of course, but my point stands

  • What a tasteful website design

  • I am a first year student in electronics engineering.

I loved watching fun youtube videos on math (ex. 3blue1brown) but was not fond of high school math, due to the lack of proofs and deeper understanding.

Nowadays the stuff I used to watch for fun turned into my job and I couldn't be happier. Finally getting to do real science feels good.

Unlike high school math, I loved high school physics but that one was mostly due to my way of learning. Which is with lots of visualisations in my head and lots of calculus to prove the formulas they made us memorize.

These days, even though my books give me the proof right away, I sometimes don't look at the proof because I miss the magic of fiddling with calculus for hours to find it myself.

I love computers but I felt like my love would diminish if I picked CS as a major. Mostly due to the monotonous nature of the job environment. But i am pretty sure my love for electronics is undying and unlike computing I have heaps to learn about electronics so I picked it.

Software should be maintained, not built and forgotten about. Windows encourages the latter, which is just straight up bad practice
