I already have a trans colored Ohio hat that I won at senior bingo a few years back. I am so ready for this

World News@quokk.au•Artemis II successfully splashes down in the Pacific Ocean
15·2 days agoMy eyes started to water when the drogues deployed, and then I couldn’t stop crying when the main drags deployed. It makes me just a bit more optimistic about the future.

Australia@aussie.zone•As a 'clog wog', Australians didn't know I was a migrant, so they confided their racismEnglish
6·4 days agoYeah my mom came to the US from England on a green card. It didn’t take her long to read between the lines what people meant when people called her “one of the good ones” when she would point out that she would also be deported if they kicked out all the immigrants.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•When do we start saying the 00s, the 10s, 20s and 30s?
9·4 days agoFlat screen TVs replaced CRT in the 2000’s, the iPhone came out in 2007, HD home media in the form of Blu-Ray, the PS3 and xBox 360, and mass internet adoption all occurred in the 2000s. You just didn’t think it was special because you were growing up with it. The slow web pages you complain about are because telecom companies in the US took billions of federal grants to upgrade their systems and then just pocketed it

Not really since we enter their realm and they give us what for. This is more akin to walking to the local shop for a snack and getting scooped up and carried away by a giant eagle

42·7 days agoIt’s not a whitewashing that the description makes it out to be. Tocequville is working for the July Monarchy and so he was interested in how liberal democracy in America
suffered fromcompared to the aristocratic structure of post-Napoleonic France. He admires the individualism of the frontier settlers while also pointing out that the US constitution has no actual mechanisms to enforce said liberal democracy when faced with an executive that doesn’t respect the separation of powers.
Reminds me of an old college buddy that went to see Roger Waters a few years back and complained that he “got political” during the show. Like c’mon dude, what do you think the whole point of Animals was?

World News@quokk.au•Huge quantities of German ammunition lie at the bottom of Norwegian lakes
1·12 days agoI skimmed through the article but I don’t understand why they decided to dump all the ammo and weapons instead of keeping them as a strategic reserve. Norway was a founding member of NATO so they clearly were worried about the USSR in the immediate aftermath of the war. Having enough German weapons to arm a national guard seems like it would have been preferable to just dumping it all.

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•Battery costs have declined by 99% in the last three decades, making electrified transport a reality
131·12 days agoWe don’t have mass lithium ion battery recycling yet because there hasn’t been enough Li+ batteries to begin recycling. As more massive batteries reach end of life it will develop. You know, since a Li+ battery has lithium concentrations several order of magnitude higher than any lithium ore you will find in any mine.

World News@quokk.au•Oil and gas prices won't immediately return to normal even if the Iran war ends, the EU warns
5·12 days agoWell yeah, even if all the infrastructure was untouched by the war it would still take months to get all those drill sites operational again, many are likely contaminated with ground water that will make extraction much more difficult. Tensions will still be high so shipping will still be dangerous and more expensive as well.
But loads of infrastructure has been damaged, so even if the war ended right now and drilling operations got started right away, production will be nowhere near what it was 8 weeks ago.

The numbers have been circulating that we could take all the cropland dedicated to growing corn for ethanol fuel, throw solar panels on it, and generate enough electricity to cover ALL US energy needs
