  • I hope the lawyers keep quitting and no one replaces them until this administration has been tossed in the trash. I worry that if lawyers with consciences don't come back, though, their positions will be filled by sycophants. I also worry that once the Democrats take back over they will be unwilling to fire the new right-wing sycophants.

  • People enlist for a variety of reasons. I don't think that who the current president is typically has much impact on those decisions.

  • What benefits does a shell like this have over bash and how hard is it to transition?

  • Even if true, $1B is nothing in the federal budget. The federal goverent spends $1.9T on heath care costs.

The ICE budget is $37.5B. So, if it were true that $1B is being spent on health care for undocumented immigrants, one year of the ice budget could pay for it for nearly 40 years.

  • It is so frustrating that we don't have high speed rail yet. The promises made to me as a kid were killed somewhere between the and now. I feel like Charlie Brown with a football...

  • They're also holding up shutdown negotiations by not passing anything new that the senate can work with. They're basically saying "do a clean CR or nothing".

  • While it isn't the full motive for the shutdown, part of the motive is likely avoiding release of the Epstine files. Currently, only one more "yes" vote is required in the House of Representatives to pass a resolution calling for the release of the files. There is a new member of the House who was elected in Arizona but she hasn't been sworn in yet. The Speaker of the House has been delaying swearing her in for two months and has essentially shut down the House to avoid the issue. In the mean time, this means that the House is doing literally nothing to end the ongoing government shutdown.

  • Here is the actual report.

I started reading it but am out of time for now. I'm fairly sure that the 93% number is number of known shoplifting incidents and is unrelated to the value of the items. I'd need to read more to be sure.

I do wonder whether the dollar numbers are inflation adjusted or not. I'm sure that info is in the report.

  • I don't get something here. How do they have a facial recognition database that is accurate enough to even begin to attempt this? Yes, most Americans have some form of photo ID but many of those IDs don't require updating the photo more than once every 10 years. Also, not everyone has a ohoto ID. How can they possibly think this database is good enough to use for determining who should be arrested?

Beyond that, ICE has stated that they are trusting the database even over actual documentation. They say the database doesn't lie, even if you have documentation saying otherwise...

  • I'm not trying to be snarky, actually wondering. What sources do you approve of?

And now I'm going to go research the independent because I had no idea about their relationships.

  • How does this idiot still have a job after the signal chat debockle?

  • Maybe show them this... The supreme court is considering whether to hear a case that could be used to reverse it's gay marriage decision from 2015.

  • This is true almost everywhere in the US.

  • I always see "did not find"

  • So, escalation it is, then. I'm guessing this guy was the voice of relative calm and had pushed back on too many times.

  • I mean, have they won any special elections since they took over the government? It seems like a lot of elections are flipping but maybe that's selection bias.

  • Have Republicans won anything recently?

  • Can we ban the Daily Beast? They are nothing but clickbait. Their headlines are always hyperbole.

In this case, some protesters interrupted Trump's speech. He stood quietly, waited for the protesters to be escorted out, then pursed his lips and said "That was very efficient ... Now, back to Steve (the man he was praising before the interruption."

I don't like Trump. He should be in prison for many reasons. We don't need lies and hyperbole polluting the narrative. He does enough awful things without making shit up.

Fuck the Daily Beast. They're as bad as anything on the right.

  • People have been pushing for a $15 minimum wage since 2012. At this point, due to inflation since 2012, that number should be about $21.

That said, adjusted for inflation, the federal minimum wage has never been above $15 in 2025 dollars. It came close in the 60's. The current inflation adjusted minimum wage is getting close to the lowest it has ever been since it was first enacted.
