  • I was speaking to a Nicaraguan co-worker a few days ago about the current situation in Nicaragua and the general geopolitical situation in Latin America as whole. She seems to be in her 50s so I ask about her memories regarding the Contras and Sandinistas. I shit you not, she actually spoke positively about the Contras; she said if the Contras were around today, Nicaragua wouldn't be in the situation that it is today. She goes on to say that her dad was falsely accused of being a member of the Contras.

    While I understand that the situation with her dad may have traumatized her, it is mind-boggling that she praised the U.S.-funded death squads.

  • This can also be said of the Cuban diaspora. So many people that I know (including those in my family) will shit talk "communism" and praise Trump as if he was their own personal savior. They don't even have a rudimentary understanding of Marxism let alone leftist political thought as a whole. Yes, Soviet-style Marxism-Leninism led to authoritarianism and the Castro regime wasn't great.     This is sickening! The fact that she only got six years is a severe injustice to those two boys and the unfortunate child that was conceived in such a manner. Let's not "both sides" this: sex abuse is sex abuse. As @MrSulu@lemmy.ml pointed out, this will probably get some attention among far-right chuds for about week and get forgotten. It won't solve any issues and one more kid will fall into that hateful ideology. I hope the two boys get the help they need and that baby gets a good family that will look after it.

    (Also, I had to look up what "Ann Summers" was in the context of this story and now I feel like shooting my laptop)
