  • A country's sociopolitical problems are theirs to solve, not a foreign actor. This should be one of the tenets of self-determination.

  • I'm not surprised that Tux has taken up drinking. RAM prices, Microslop, AI infestation, and his homeland is melting from underneath.

  • It's bound to cause some destabilization in the region. Israel is all too happy that Daddy America help attack a long time rival and the Saudis are celebrating that their planet-destroying endeavors oil interests are protected. People will say that Iranians are celebrating his death. The ayatollah was a brutal religious tyrant but that doesn't change the fact the US and Israel didn't do this to save the Iranian people; they did this for their own geopolitical endgames.

  • There are reports going around that an AR-15 is now cheaper than current RAM sticks. We could sell our RAM sticks and pay Sam Altman a visit.

  • I'd argue that an armed uprising would have a greater effect than a smaller internet-based boycott but I'm just some random guy on some niche internet forum so... who's to say?

  • Dime que eres gringa sin decirme que eres gringa.

  • Without Dan Simmons and Hyperion, sci-fi literature would've been still been regarded as disposable paperbacks. Simmons did away with the trappings of early pulp sci-fi that held a shadow over the genre for many decades. Instead, Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion took the shape of the Western Canon and could be discussed as serious literature. Without spoiling too much, I remember reading the story of Sol Weintraub and his daughter and almost being brought to tears; something that no other book, regardless of genre, has done.

Rest well, scribe. Asimov, Heinland, Clarke, Herbert and, of course, Keats. You'll be in good company

  • Why so antitrust? Trust is a good thing! Don't you trust us to take care of Batman? Trust us, WB is in good hands. /s

  • Ironic considering the MAGA crowd complained about 15-minute cities. Don't want little Bobby having a school, library, park and stores within walking and cycling distance from Mommy and Daddy's two-story, HOA-approved house.

  • I'm a bit conflicted on the population and birthrate issue. On one hand you have those who worry that an ever increasing population will lead to resource scarcity, economic stress and degrading climate resilience. Then you have those, especially on the right, that insist we need to have more babies. Usually, that "we" is white people. For example, that weird Collins couple who are having kids not of love but out of eugenic patriotic obligation.

So, my question is this: when discussing population crisis, be it overpopulation or under-population, what is legitimate concern and what's just ring-wing fear mongering?

  • Since the replies are about people being nostalgic for corporate sandwich franchise, allow me to give a hoagie recipe so you recreate those great sandwiches:

    • Flour (Wheat flour if you're a healthy boi)
    • Yeast
    • Salt
    • Olive or Avocado Oil
    • Water
    • Optional: Vital wheat gluten, Diastatic malt powder and Dough conditioner

The measurements will be up to you but if you decide to include vital wheat gluten, you're going to have to add a bit more water. As a baseline, try to make a dough that will yield at least 4 hoagies. This recipe works best with a food processor but can be made by hand.

    Mix the dry ingredients first

Once thoroughly combined, add olive or avocado oil

Add the water to make the dough

Knead the dough. If using a food processor, 3-4 spins on high. If making by hand or you prefer to knead by hand, knead on flat surface for about 8 minutes. Use the windowpane test to see if the dough has developed enough gluten. If it fails this test, keep kneading until it passes.

Once ready, proof the dough for 1 hour

After 1 hour, cut the dough into 4 pieces. Roll each piece into a ball shape and proof for 1 hour

After that other hour, take each piece and flatten into a square-ish shape. From here, you two options for forming the hoagie. Option 1: fold one side to the center, fold the other side so it meets the edge of the first fold and seal the edges. Option 2: Roll into a blunt (heh!) shape sealing the edges as you go.

Proof each piece for 1 hour. This should be our last proof.

Once that's done, preheat the oven to 425°F 218°C. While the oven is heating up, take a either a sharp knife or a bread lame and make an incision down the middle of the bread. Optionally, while the oven is heating up place either a cast iron pan or brownie pan on the bottom (heh!) rack. When baking the hoagies you can add some ice to pan to create steam.

When the oven is ready, place the hoagies-to-be into the oven and bake for 12-14 minutes. Once done, take them out of the oven, let them cool and enjoy!

As for "topping your sub"? Well, I have some suggestions (besides the obvious). Avoid prepackage meats if you can. Go to either a butcher or the deli section and ask for fresh slices of meats. Try to also get the freshest vegetables either form the produce section or growing it yourself if you're into that. Condiments don't need that much diligence so add whatever you like.

  • Now, what does this remind me of?

  • Mathcore: Am I a joke to you?

  • Never thought of that way. We all want security; personal, financial, employment, etc. Parents want their children safe from harm. Thinking of this way, I now realize that companies like Flock are exploiting that desire for security by offering a false hope.

  • There was already a case of a police officer using a Flock camera to stalk his ex-girlfriend.

  • I'm proud of you, girls! Tell Dear Leader to go fuck himself.

  • I really, really would like to love and support my home state but the GOP is making it really difficult. Memphis, my home town, gave birth to blues, soul and rock'n'roll, was pivotal in the civil rights movement, gorgeous view to the Mississippi River and a world renowned BBQ scene. Nashville has a thriving nightlife and a music scene of its own owing to its numerous music halls. Chattanooga and Knoxville are their own little nuggets of Tennessee charm. There's also the natural beauty: Great Smoky Mountains and the associated national park, numerous smaller state parks, swimmable lakes (e.g. Percy Priest Lake), and so forth. This isn't even including the extensive Native American history.

Instead of using it's natural beauty and rich, though troubled, history to make Tennessee a center of the southern U.S., Bill Lee and his Republican-led (i.e. Trumpist stronghold) state house makes it a living hell for everyone. xAI was allowed to install poisonous gas turbines right next to poor, black neighborhoods. ICE and the National Guard were given carte blanche to roam our streets. The south is, truly, a backwards backwater.

  • This is actually good advice... in isolation. Encouraging people to spend their money more wisely can bring awareness to an issue but it ultimately does little to implement change. Sure, you and I (and the Fediverse as a whole) might be hyper-vigilant about these kind of things but the average consumer isn't. Continuing with your Nintendo example, Nintendo has decades of brand recognition and a zealous fanbase to satisfy the demand. An eager gaming press will gladly take free hardware from Nintendo for positive coverage.

Real change won't happen until the tap is turned off, so to speak. These companies are taking advantages of gaps in the law that permit them to get away with this. Antitrust law in the US dates back to a time when steam-powered trains were still common and the last breakup involved a telephone company. When AT&T was broken up, the home computer (desktop in modern parlance) was just starting to take off.

So, yes, we should spend our money elsewhere when we see this kinds of corporate abuses but until you starve the beast, keep expecting these kinds of behaviors.

  • Napalm Death though the current line-up has been the same since their third album with sad exemption of Jesse Pintado who passed away in 2006.
