  • All laws written by humans are a common belief system and "inherently unprovable". There is no proof why the constitution of the United States would be better or worse than the constitution of France. There is no proof why international law would be right or wrong. Try explaining the Geneva convention to the emperors of the past... All of these are based on shared values and entirely dependent on the human subjects, not some objective fact.

You are constructing a justification for bigotry, by saying that it is acceptable to exclude one group of people based on your generalizations against them. I tried to show you that it is arbitrary as all bigotry is.

  • As i have said it is hush money. The German government itself says explicitly that these are not reparations, because reparations means taking legal responsibility.

You need to differentiate between "here is some money, now shut up" and "i acknowledge that i have done wrong and i am responsible to compensate for the damage that i have done."

We also see the same thing with companies who poison the environment or harm their consumers with dangerous products. They seek to "settle" outside of court because taking actual responsibility would be far more costly. It is the same what Trump and other rich rapists have been doing with many of their victims. Give them money, make them shut up and deny responsibility.

Maybe it needs to be said one more time: The German government itself explicitly says that it is not paying compensation and that it sees no duty to pay compensation as there was no international law prohibiting genocide and other colonial crimes back then.

  • My point exactly. Bigotry is wrong and making up reasons why bigotry against one group would be acceptable is just more bigotry and equally wrong.

  • You say yourself, that there needs to be reparations, which requires acknowledging a responsibility. The German government is explicitly denying such responsibility. The German government does not want a solution for the colonial crimes. In this case it is the German government sowing division, not the DPA article reporting on it and the person sharing the post.

EDIT: Also i find your claim of "desired narrative" against Germany and the EU does not hold, when looking at the post history:

Here some excerpts from the past 3-4 days post history of @schizoidman@lemmy.zip that don't fit that claim:

'Tesla shame' bypasses Norway as sales jump despite Musk's politicsIndia buys 2 million bpd Russian oil in AugustBrazil is open for business, Lula says at Chinese factory openingTrump says Ukraine needs to make a deal after summit with Putin ends without ceasefireFlooding kills over 250 people in Pakistan, IndiaForget Netflix, Volkswagen locks horsepower behind paid subscriptionDutch children among those at EU sanctioned Russian summer camp in occupied Crimea...

Most EU countries aren't doing good right now. Posting articles on that does not seem to be about setting a narrative imo.

  • Would you say the same about women? What about queer people? What about the social class? What about ethnicity? What about deelpy atheist people?

For any group identity you can make such claims of biases. Instead of excluding everyone from becoming judges, because everyone will have some form of bias, we should look by their qualifications and act if they show clear biases making them unfit. In this case the ICJ vice-president showed a clear bias making her unfit. However before making religious claims she already was a mouth-piece for Israel in the court and there is reason to believe her being blackmailed or bribed.

There is a reason why there is so many judges on the ICJ and why most supreme courts have a high number of judges. It is to limit biases going into the decision by having a wide range of people, whose inevitable biases are cancelled out against each other.

  • There is a pretty close relationship between overall productivity and relative wealth and well being of the general population. See all industrialized nations.

People who can look beyond surviving start to consume, which drives demand, which drives the need for workers. Productivity can be forced shortly, but in the long run it goes down as people have less energy, are less focused, more accidents happen, more things break...

  • DPA is about as far away from clickbait as it can be.

However, the government added: "The concept of reparations in international law arises from the violation of an international obligation," which, it notes, did not exist at the time the injustices were committed.

"The concept of reparations is therefore not applicable in the context of Germany's colonial past," the government said.

    ...

Of this, €1.05 billion is to be allocated to a reconstruction and development programme and €50 million for reconciliation.

I understand it the following way:

The German government does reject to give compensations. Instead it offers economic development and some token money, which explicitly is not compensation, but serves to hush the issue away. This is like Trump settling with one of his rape victims to pay them to drop the case and shut up.

    https://www.namibian.com.na/germany-rejects-reparation-payments-to-former-colonies/

Germany maintains the money was expressly intended as a “gesture of recognition” and not as reparations – to possibly prevent further legal claims.

And that is the key issue here. Germany denies a responsibility to compensate the victims as this precedent would give further victims ground to demand compensation. It would mean taking actual responsibility and meeting the victims eye to eye rather than talking down on them. The DPA headline is correct and the hush money must not be accepted as equal to compensation.

  • I don't know. As a lack of proper inspections is a key aspect to the issue, i wouldn't trust it not to be the case.

  • I can only speak about Germany, but Germany is one of the largest pork producers and consumers.

There is at least one mayor scandal every year about malpractice, lack of hygiene and/or abuse of workers at industrial animal farms and slaughterhouses. The number of government inspectors only is enough to allow for inspections about once every 20 years or so per business. Also in many cases inspections are done by the local veterinarians, who also have the farmers/slaughter houses as customers and have a clear conflict of interest.

  • It is in Germany's security interest to keep Russian as a mayor military power as far away as possible. It is also in Germany's interest to build a rules based international order, where wars of aggression are punished, although Germany's hypocrisy around the US and especially around Israel is undermining that independently of Ukraine/Russia.

  • Remember when people thought Merz was to stand in for Ukraine, because he had made many claims towards that during his campaign?

    Yeah...

  • God commanded us good things to do and prohibited us from doing bad things.

You should just life your life in accordance with that as good as possible and don't concern yourself with when the end times are, or when your life ends. It is important not to postpone doing good things, or to continue doing bad things thinking "i'll just make up for them later." Because God might decide to end your life in an accident or other sudden way.

There is no indication afaik. in any of the Abrahamic scriptures that you should try to fulfill any prophecies and it certainly does not take priorities over doing what is good in on itself and abstaining from what is bad in on itself.

  • The thing with "just works" in monopolies is that it eventually stops working. I already have terrible excel bugs all the time on my work computer. Left clicking a cell sometimes just selects half a dozen adjancent cells. You vlick something and all of a sudden the rendering just goes completely haywire... You have two larger tables open and it just crashes...

Things will only get worse from this, until the global economy will loose trillions to being stuck with Microsoft.

  • I am religious. I find the idea of purposefully bringing on the end of times strongly contradictory to my understanding of the Abrahamic religions. It is not the place of humans to decide, when the end times come, nor do humans have the power to do so. And the idea that purposefully bringing on the end of the world would be rewarded, instead of punished, by God is incomprehensible to me.

There is a narration both in Judaism and Islam, that emphasizes this:

    https://bliis.org/essay/planting-a-tree-in-the-end-times-an-analysis-of-an-islamic-and-jewish-saying/

    “If the [Day of] Resurrection were established upon one of you, and in his hand is a sapling, then he should plant it.”

“If you are holding a sapling in your hand and someone tells you, ‘Come quickly, the Messiah is here!’, first finish planting the tree and then go to greet the Messiah.” – Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai (30 BC – 90 CE),

  • Dürfen Kiffer mittlerweile Blut spenden? Ich dachte, dass Drogenkonsum (außer Alkohol und Tabak) noch immer ein Ausschlussgrund ist.

  • While true, there is other issues with gender inequality in Eastern Europe like relatively higher domestic violence towards women and legislature to enable it in countries like Russia.

Inequality is a complex issue and needs to be looked at holistically. I have a feeling that often there is a focus on work and "career" although later seems to be mostly measured in some women who made it to C-levels. In that sense it remains an issue of women being supposed to "function" in a narrow line, rather than the system as a whole being questioned.

More women working full time is sold as a success of emancipation, despite it meaning more work overall for women who have children as some care work is difficult to delegate. At the same time it is a massive loss, that a lot of "life goals" like owning your own home require two full time income or just aren't reachable any more despite higher education levels.

When it comes to single parents, poverty becomes a strong problem and it helps enable abusive relationships as people are economically compelled to stay with an abusive partner. This issue moved on from the stay at home wives to women working full time too.

More income and less working hours are needed generally, and should help emancipation of women even more. In the eyes of capitalists that would be a grave "malfunction".
