  • If you can spare a spa day once every couple of months, you can try sugar waxing at home. The smoothness lasts way longer than shaving and it's more gentle on the skin (and easier to clean) than normal waxing. After a few years of that my hair stopped growing back on my calves, and I haven't had to shave there in a long time.

  • As others have said, it's on the religious to show that the thing they're attributing to god or gods could have no other possible reason or method or cause than a god. People over time have observed the world, nature and life to come up with some possible causes and mechanisms for how things work, and found plenty of answers that are mundane and banal and notably lacking in gods. Just about anyone who wants to look at the same thing closely can see the same evidence for simple, physical explanations, and make their own conclusions.

Imagine that you find a really big spider web in a high place. The religious are basically saying "that's proof Spiderman exists". They've read about Spiderman and know the traits of Spiderman and specifically look for ways they can make the physical world confirm the existence of Spiderman.

An atheist would look for the spider. Even if they had no luck finding it, they would build a hypothesis that, since every time we've looked in a spiderweb before, we've found a spider, there probably is a spider capable of climbing that high and building a web that big. Even if no one found the spider in the lifetimes of those hypothetical people, it still wouldn't mean that Spiderman made that web. There are just too many hypotheses that are much more likely based on our previous knowledge of the world.

Just about every time we've ever gone looking for reasons something happened or is the way it is, we've found an answer that doesn't involve any need for divine intervention.

  • Definitely recommend it, it's a major departure from his usual hijinx. It's a genuinely sweet and quirky movie.

  • You can definitely still get that thrill of highly impactful combat, just not at any of the major meta events. The world at this point is so big that if you're anywhere that's not on the event timer you'll probably be roaming by yourself. If you find a small event chain and it's just you pushing it, it can be exciting and suspenseful. Knowing that if you get downed, all of your progress will reset, it's a great moment when someone else runs up and starts reviving you and helps you succeed.

There are also instanced scenarios like dungeons, fractals and raids where you and a team have to be strategic with your classes and builds and how they synergize, and then there's the added dimension of much more demanding movement and maneuvering than in the first game. I loved both games, they're different but both great in their own ways IMO. If you only ever played in some of the starting maps I highly recommend giving it another go.

  • My contribution would be candied hibiscus flowers in syrup. They can be used as a garnish on a dessert like a tart or a nice sorbet, but they're perfectly fine to eat on their own. The flower has a subtle warm berry-like flavor. You don't eat the syrup directly but you can mix it in drinks or serve it with desserts.

I don't know how much of a chocolate lover the person in question is, but if they like it a fun thing to try is a sampler of single origin chocolates. It can be fun to taste the difference between chocolates from different regions and see how one is fruity, another is smokey, another is earthy etc.

  • That would be quite optimistic, but this is something I've noticed at multiple restaurants myself. I saw the tip "suggestions" were not accurate so I checked to see what numbers they might have been using and tried the after tax amount etc, but nope the numbers are just inflated artificially. It's happened with or without alcohol on the tab, with and without sale items, and I don't ever really get anything "comped" unless it's a sauce on the side or something. I wouldn't say it's a scam, but I did roll my eyes the first time I noticed it.

  • At least where I am, there are some important and influential positions that are on a volunteer basis, and literally all you do is email someone in the town, say "I'm interested in this board/committee", and they're like "cool we meet every other Wednesday, see you then".

I definitely encourage anyone who is pissed off at feeling powerless to look at your town or city's website, see what boards and committees might interest you, and start showing up.

  • "Beware he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart, he dreams himself your master."

From Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, which is full of banger quotes

  • There's a book called The Art of Procrastination, and its main premise is basically this. It's amazing the amount of things you can get done by avoiding doing something else.

  • There's so many great American chocolates though, it's the cheap stuff that gives it such a bad reputation. Taza, Theo, Lake Champlain, Chocolove and lots of other little chocolatiers just doing their things but they just don't have the same kind of market presence.

  • Chocolate. I absolutely adore chocolate, but only good chocolate. I've sought out and nibbled on hundreds of different bars and blends. Anything under 70% dark just doesn't do it for me. I've melted down chocolate bars and mixed in baking chocolate and reset it so it would be darker.

Whitman's? Russel Stover? Hershey? Reeses? Miss me with that please.

If you get the chance to try a single origin Ecuadorian dark chocolate it's amazing, complex, fruity and floral. All of the pretentious stuff people describe about wine is genuinely there in chocolate.

  • Agree 100%, I make my own home made ice cream and it's like a completely different dessert than storebought, but Talenti Gelato is a quite serviceable alternative I wouldn't ever say no to. Generally ice cream is like bread: grocery stores will have a poor shadow of it, a good shop that makes it in house is the best if you get it fresh, and making it yourself is a way to get the good stuff cheap.

  • Same, if I'm going to have the calories I'm going to make it worth it. That and the good stuff always leaves me feeling more satisfied with a smaller amount

  • If you have 3d design experience, along with doing 3d print files you could also sell assets on sites like CG trader or Turbosquid. You could make smartmaterials/gltfs or other asset bundles and list them and maybe start getting a passive income. Also consider offering a commercial license option for your 3d prints, I understand that's usually where artists end up making more 3d print sales because people will justify the cost by thinking they will sell the prints, and often they don't.

  • For me, a 32oz pot of black tea brewed for 5-6 minutes consumed at least 12 hours before I go to bed does the trick. It gets me going and takes away the fog, and when I'm following the timing rule it doesn't mess with my sleep at all.

However, people have all sorts of tolerance and sensitivity levels to caffeine, as well as individual reactions, body chemistry etc, it's probably something you will have to experiment with to find the right balance for you.

  • Caffeine has a calming or even sedative effect on a decent number of people who have ADHD, so that may be a part of it. Personally I have to cut off all caffeine intake about 12 hours before bed or I have trouble sleeping, but my grandmother used to have a cup of coffee before bed and drop off within 20 minutes.

  • I don't think that's a fair assessment of Guild Wars 2. It was not a true sequel to Guild Wars 1 but it's a decent game in its own right. I can see that if you're playing a great city builder game and they announced a sequel, you would be thrown if that sequel was a 4x instead. But in this analogy, it's a damn good 4x and maybe even the best amongst its contemporaries. Plus the original game is still there in all of its charm and originality, they've kept the servers running this long and seem to plan on keeping on doing so until no one is playing.

  • Haha weirdo checking in, tastes like soap but it's like refreshing? Kinda like you can say something minty tastes like toothpaste but it's not really a bad thing
