  • Putin actually aspired for Russia to join NATO decades ago. People forget that Russia is anti-imperialist because of circumstance, not because of state ideology.

  • Honestly, when you consider that a major objective of instigating the Ukraine-Russia war was to shorten the US's leash over its European vassals, desperation to maintain NATO as a bloc makes more sense when it comes to attacking Iran. We all know Iran has been in the US-Zionist scope for the past few decades, but it's also always been understood that a direct confrontation with Iran would be utterly disastrous.

  • To add to this, decline isn't something that is guaranteed to happen swiftly. The decline and subsequent fall of Rome took centuries. I know that's a cliche example, but it's still useful to think of imperialist decline in this way. Considering the scale of its hegemony, the US nation-state is likely to follow a similar path of withering over time.

  • Yeah totally. Lets not romanticize working on an assembly line as a human machine. It can be mentally understimulating and hard on the body. At the end of the day we should be for automation under socialism so that it can free us from this drudgery.

  • Lots of good detailed answers here. I'll start off by trying to explain it even more succinctly by breaking down DiaMat into its simpler terms.

Dialectic - The examination/investigation of opposing ideas that eventually reach a resolution (in other words, a dialogue).

Materialism - Reality stems from the material world (ideas and consciousness are products of matter).

Therefore, Dialectical Materialism is the examination of opposing material forces that eventually reach a material resolution.

The implication here is that reality isn't static. And the engine that drives change in our material world is the competition (or "dialogue") between material forces.

More broadly this encompasses examples like environmental pressure leading to new species adaptations (natural selection), the collision of hot and cold air leading to storm systems, and nuclear reactions.

More specifically, Marx takes this further and applies the DiaMat lens to the development of human civilization (i.e. Historical materialism). This is how we can recognize that our current existence under capitalism is not some static "end of history" (reality changes), but a temporary mode of production that will eventually resolve itself into something new ("socialism or barbarism") through opposing material forces (the working class vs the ruling class).

  • Venezuela was an expensive PR mission that did nothing to actually threaten the Bolivarian revolution. Maduro wasn't even in hiding and the government assuredly had plans in case the US pulled some BS like this. If anything, the state will be even more attentive to squashing possible US proxies and collaborators

The US is also literally incapable of occupying Venezuelan territory.

  • The "crony capitalism is the problem, not capitalism" crowd

  • Not to mention that capitalism has priced us out of basic life milestones, like buying a home or even having children. And yet, we are still being expected to do so.

  • It would be nice if communists in the West stopped platforming him.

  • I think thats true for a lot of Western liberals generally. But a lot of liberals still do care about the wellbeing about people in other countries. They just have no actual comprehension about imperialism as a system and how they benefit from it as citizens of empire. Not saying their ignorance is excusable, but it's what allows their compassion to be weaponized at whatever foreign boogeyman is next in empire's scope. ("The Ukraine War is Russia's fault," "Uyghurs," "Trump kidnapping Maduro is wrong but Maduro is still a meanie poo-poo head")

  • Sure, but there is at least a sizeable academic challenge against that belief, even if mainstream Western culture still accepts the narrative that the bombs were necessary for victory over Japan. Maybe it exists in China too and I just havent been exposed to it.

On rednote I was told by a Chinese user that without the use of the nukes, China would have surrendered to the Soviets and the US but still continued their rampage into China. I'm not sure how true this is, since my understanding is limited. But thought it was interesting how the perspective of this event is viewed through their lens vs the West. As much as there is animosity between China and the US, there is still a widespread appreciation for America that they nuked Japan.

  • 100%

  • My new years resolution is to simply stop talking to liberals. And that includes "leftists" who regurgitate imperialist propaganda. It's simply not worth my mental health.

  • There are a few popular Chinese nationalist takes on history that are still questionable. Like on Rednote, for example, you'll run into the narrative a lot that the Soviets became imperialists and tried to invade/nuke China. Lots of Chinese also still think nuking Japanese citizens twice was necessary, even though it's pretty well established with further analysis that Japan was eventually going to surrender to the US or the USSR anyway without the use of nuclear weapons.

  • Yeah, these conversations can really only be had with other socialists who are earnestly trying to detangle themselves from imperialist propaganda of their own accord. Otherwise, it's fruitless most of the time.

Really, you can extend that to any political discussion. You're not going to convince anyone of anything if they are primed for debate mode.

  • Raising revolutionary children is a revolutionary act.

  • What do you mean by "that it means the US iscollapsing?" Because just looking at the general state of the US indicates it is. Could you be more specific about what you mean?

  • RIP Assata

  • Oh I agree with that. They aren't inseparable. Material circumstances influence outlook, whether consciously or unconsciously.
