G*mers acting like they haven’t spent the past two decades only buying digital games while killing brick and mortar stores (Steam doesn’t count apparently)

It’s less about digital version than open market. For physical games several vendors are in competition, slowing the enshitification and inflation while digital version are exclusive to sony/microslop/nintendo allowing them absurd prices and practices. On pc it’s different, little games are exclusive to steam, there’s also gog, itch.io, epic… Furthermore, enshitification and inflation are slowed by piracy and community. Yes the domination of steam must be worrying but they also empower players, remember when sony tried to force it’s account on helldivers. So yes, steam is different than console store, lots of problems but still better.

Owning vs licensing isn’t the same as digital vs physical. I don’t want to clutter my apartment with plastic cases and disc trash but I want to own what I purchase. Software can be DRM free, console software could be too…

The other thing that never gets mentioned, you can’t actually play the 1.0 version of the games on discs anymore anyway.

The first thing it does is load 50g of day one patches etc

So even if you have a disc, if the servers go down, you ain’t going to be able to play the game the way you want.

They won’t delete most of your library, but they definitely will delete part of it. And the simps will somehow find a way to keep simpin.

dude they already own the locked down hardware you need to play the games. you already have to pay monthly fees or get locked out of most of your games. they can already lock you out of all your games whether or not you have physical media. if you’re doing business with sony, YOU’RE ALREADY FUCKED. just lie back and enjoy it, or fucking leave.

Online activation requirements. Physical media going away is really just a symptom, DRM is the actual issue. Games have always been just a license, what changed is that the licenses are no longer transferable and irrevokable. (They might even still be legally irrevokable, not sure, but they can just shut down drm servers and you can’t install).

Ofc DRM-free steam games or GOG games etc. aren’t transferable either, but the main issue for most people is clearly that they might lose access.

Consoles could just include a feature to back up game install files to USB storage or NAS and losing disks becomes irrelevant, but DRM will always fuck the customer in the ass.

It’s funny I see this, as I’m on my phone while I rip and compress my (DRM free) steam games to put in gameyfin.

Literally just copying the game folder. I compress it as much as I can with 7zip and I put it on gameyfin. It works for games that don’t have DRM*

Gameyfin is just for metadata and to download the games, it doesn’t actually get them for you.

*For some games you need to do something extra. If you’re interested I recommend you this resource.
