It rings of Adorno’s hatred of Jazz as a fully capitalist genre, which by reading his criticism strikes me as just classical music chauvinism behind “Marxist” analysis.
The author doesn’t even propose any examples of what they think “good” mass culture should be. Apparently the only way you can find joy and meaning in your life is through rigorous study of Marxism.
If this wasn’t published on monthly review, and the author wasn’t so self-serious, I’d even think it’s a satire piece made to make fun of “fun-hating Marxists”
i was trying to do opposites and VF is the highest brow and least spectacle of major fighting games, while mk has a legion of mega casual players who are just there for the gore. plus mk is massively different every time while vf has been milking vf 5 for 20 years.

obviously good mass culture is The Wire, InterVision, Loyalists, and Virtua Fighter

Imma be real with you, I know nearly nothing about fighting games, I just remember being very frustrated at VF, while Tekken was fun even if I sucked.
Now that you explained your point it does make sense! VF is the kind of fighting game people who optimize for everything would want to play.
VF feels very stiff while Tekken just has a nice “flow” to it.
Lenin had similar issues with PROLEKULT and modern art in general, he was a big classics enjoyer
