It was an In The Groove (ITG, similar to a community-friendly DDR) tournament. Around 50-60 € for an entire 4 days. For me it was literally a <40€ roundtrip train ticket to the venue, when most of the participants flew themselves there
Rhythm gaming is a stupidly expensive hobby outside of Japan, so I doubt people who are into the game would have financial difficulties making there… Heck the few folks from Sweden co-operate an arcade business there. However you are correct, a lot of ppl were probably gatekept from even getting into the hobby in the first place due to finances. In this case, ITG takes at least 300-400 € to get started (buying a home controller), or spend at least 20 € every week at the arcade if you even live close to one (which is usually not the case in Europe)
