Ehhhhh…there are similarities, but they play out differently.
Marty Supreme is about a guy who is hyper competitive because he is obsessed with excellence and fame and glory, and he hopes that his competitive drive will give him an Achilles-like immortality. The legacy of World War Two and the Holocaust loom large here- he doesn’t want to just disappear like so many other Jews did. His desire for glory leaves him at the end when his child is born, giving him a different kind of immortality, since something of him will continue on in his offspring.
Inside Llewyn Davis is about a guy who loves music so intensely that he is willing to endure a world that punishes him over and over for it until his love of music is beaten out of him too. Also
cw self harm
his duet partner committed suicide and he’s not dealing with it well.
Ultimately it’s about a guy who could have been Bob Dylan but wasn’t, partly due to bad luck and partly due to his own decisions. Not my favorite Coen Brothers movie, partly because several people who were involved with the early 60s folk revival said that it made a very beautiful and welcoming time and place look inhospitable and miserable and without any comradery. Killer soundtrack though.
The Soundtrack is sort of tge “tragedy” to Mighty Wind’s “Farce”. But omg I absolutely love the Adam Driver/ Justin Timberlake/ Oscar Isaac “please Mr. Kennedy.”
