It’s not dogma to investigate and debunk made up claims. The CPC isn’t perfect, but there’s a huge difference between “it makes mistakes” and “it committed genocide”. Genocide is a very serious thing and the shallowness of takes like this one trivialize the seriousness of it.

Colonialism did shit like punishing kids for using words in their own language. Are the Boy Scouts genocide because kids are put in camps? Is all law enforcement a tool of genocide because it forces people to comply with local laws and tries to get them to reform? I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but damn, it’s important not to mix up aesthetic with material realities. Statements like “round up everyone who needs rounding up” mean absolutely nothing. Arresting people in a society isn’t genocide. Confining them to a specific location isn’t genocide. Trying for rehabilitation isn’t genocide. If it was, every society with jails would be constantly committing genocide and trying to forcibly get people to change their ways would be genocide too.

It’s the specific character and system of the actions that is defining (brutal specifics like that of colonialism: punishing a kid for speaking in their own language as part of an attempt to erase an entire culture and conquer a region), not vague abstract attributes (“put people in a camp”). Reducing everything to abstract properties in order to force a narrative is how you get stuff like horseshoe theory: “both sides use force??? oof, I condemn all use of force… except for when it’s me using force to condemn use of force”.

That’s a massive downsizing of the usual claim. They are losing the grip on the narrative so they try to moderate their claims and “wait it out” till the political climate changes (spoiler: it’s only gonna get worse for the China Hawks from here)
