I believe it makes the illusion work for each person, so if you shut it off they would be standing closer to each other but they can run continually and not hit the wall. That’s why it takes a huge amount of power.

Each person has their own holo-treadmill, lensing and refraction to make them seem further away, and sound dampening to make someone 1/4 of a meter away seem like you have to shout
