The sample size of only four women, is very small. It’s not enough to conclude they used more perfume or make up. Plus, not all of them were present at all sites. All of them were professional ornithologists on a field trip, not about to go out. They avoided anything that could have made a difference, e.g. they hid long hair.
birds are also especially sensitive to airborne irritants and toxins because of their lung structure, it’s not necessarily a smell thing
