I remember that a phone number wasn’t needed, only if you entered certain communities that required a confirmed phone number.

I guess it’s a good thing my account is old enough that I didn’t have to provide a phone number?
Officially they don’t always require a phone number to register an account. Unfortunately the reality is that they may as well require it for all new accounts now, I can’t remember the last time I heard of someone registering without one.
