It’s not the subject matter that’s shit, it’s how they often approach it. I find it’s important to have a clear distinction between the two. It’s hard to critique a poorly made story when it seems like what you’re objecting to is inclusivity and diversity.
If that happens, people are usually quickly reduced to shouting insults, especially online. It’s infuriating to those who feel seen and included, potentially for the first time.
