He just apologized for saying that Kirk called for the stoning of gays, which wasn’t technically true.

“And it says, by the way, Ms. Rachel, might want to crack open that Bible of yours, in a lesser referenced part of the same part of scripture is in Leviticus 18, is that thou shall lay with another man shall be stoned to death. Just saying. So, Ms. Rachel, you quote Leviticus 19, love your neighbor as yourself. The chapter before affirms God’s perfect law when it comes to sexual matters”

I dont get it, he literally advocated for stoning gays, calling it “God’s perfect law”

No no. He was, “just saying,” not advocating. Completely different.

I for one “just say” things all the time even though I don’t mean them. It’s a bit like Tourette’s really.

I hated Kirk as much as the next Lemmy user but I think he’s right to apologize. He parroted a technically-incorrect statement and the right thing to do is to acknowledge it. The world has become wayyyy too ok with “close enough” and “sounds true” attacks.

As soon as a rumor starts, a meme is “made” with every applicable template. I watched it happen real time in the comments of a now-deleted misinformation post about the Kirk shooting. Those memes are surely still circulating despite being proven false and 99% of people aren’t gonna fact check.
