In the USA, humans were enslaved. Abolitionists, such as Frederick Douglass, resisted the practice of slavery. There are many important abolitionist figures. I’m fond of John Brown.

Guess they are one of the kind of people you know if you are from that particular county, but if you are you do in fact know who they were.
Very important to American history, but yeah I don’t think he’d be much important outside of here. Maybe Liberia.
Unfortunately, I would wager that the average American doesn’t know who he is either.
