Hamas has agreed to a proposal by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff for a Gaza cease-fire, a Palestinian official close to the group told Reuters on Monday. Witkoff reportedly denied the report. The new proposal, which sees the release of ten hostages and 70 days of truce, was received by Hamas through mediators. “The proposal includes the release of ten living Israeli hostages held by Hamas in two groups in return for a 70-day cease-fire and a partial withdrawal from the Gaza Strip,” the source said.
Witkoff denied the report, Axios reporter Barak Ravid said. According to Ravid, Witkoff said Hamas’s response to his offer was “disappointing and completely unacceptable.”
“That deal is on the table. Hamas should take it,” Witkoff reportedly said, noting Israel would only agree to a temporary cease-fire and partial hostage deal that would “lead to substantive negotiations to find a path to a permanent cease-fire, which I agreed to preside over.”
An Israeli official dismissed the latest cease-fire proposal from Hamas on Monday, saying no responsible government could accept such an agreement and rejecting the assertion by Hamas that the deal matched one proposed by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff.
