And that’s great and all, but I don’t need a new board. What about a $10 add-on card for those that can’t/don’t need to buy a whole board? A quick look on Amazon, competing add-on cards are $70 and up… For $10 they can swallow the market whole for this.
Is it not better to use fibre for 10Gbps than Ethernet?
Yes. Base-T 10Gb is limited to 55m depending on the cable
While fibre can go from 400m to to 80Km depending on the cable and optics.
It’s great that 10GbE is getting cheaper, but at $10 for the network chip alone, there is no way it will be available at a $80 mainboard.
But at least it likely will be an option for midrange boards.
Edit: just took a look, the cheapest mainboard with 10GbE onboard is now €370. Currently, if you need 10GbE, it’s smarter to buy an expansion card.
