That means they don’t pay taxes and may get federal funding. Make of that what you will.
…it’s always the ones you most suspect.
Can other instances do that?
i think so. mastodon’s also got a us tax exempt org going

clicked on mastodon and this was like the third post i saw. Art
to be fair you can be a fediverse / FOSS type of person and still be a liberal progressive in most matters, especially foreign diplomacy
Domestically liberal but internationally conservative
If an org take government money, they are bound by government demands.
Except they’re not.
.worlds tax and financial filings are quite literally public as a 501c. Did you bother to look them up? Can you show me where the government money is?
yeah, the default instance is… not good
Eh. I don’t really think that’s indicative of much. Having a tax-exempt business tag means that the operator can also write off the electricity cost, cost of servers, and other maintenance on their taxes.
They also aren’t automatically getting federal funding. That’s a different tax code. A 501 3 c means that the org is allowed to receive tax deductible donations, meaning that anyone who donated to the org can write off the donation amount as a charity expense.
Pretty smart move actually.
No it’s not.
Ok? Thanks for the input.
I’m crashing out over the typo. It’s 501©(3). I feel so much better just typing that out.
Thanks
