by my reckoning there are opposing factions that use hexbear. the ones that are opposed to ai and llms unconditionally and the ones that see it as a tech that should be completely embraced so long as it’s chinese. for my part it’s a technology that while useful in principle was invented for oppression’s sake and will only be applied in the most anti-human way but it must be put to use whether we like it or not because it has applications that have been made by the us government against the left already. we must recognize its purpose and its potential, then get the better of it like anything used to attack us

i ask because i don’t think it’s been asked before and it would be useful in defusing conflicts i’ve seen and participated in, and because time is of the essence for it to be hashed out

Depends on what you mean by “AI,” it’s become an annoying catch-all term that means everything from chat-bots to machine learning systems used to analyze proteins in cancer cells.

Image and video generation are awful and should basically never be used.

Chat-bots are nearly as bad but have some things they’re helpful for: Coding tools can be helpful when not overly relied on. They can be useful for internet or file searches (although they wouldn’t be as necessary if Google wasn’t dogshit now). They should never ever ever be used for customer service. If you just talk to them for fun you should be lobotomized.

Specialized machine-learning systems for things like research and medical treatment are very powerful and mean people can live who otherwise would die.

Tell that to the people writing press releases about research! I keep seeing shit like “AI powered cancer treatment” when it means machine learning used to analyze the proteins in cancer cells

I agree with the sentiment of this, but it’s an annoying (and very deliberately muddled) semantic landscape. “generative AI” doesn’t really have any agreed upon meaning either; A lot of traditional ML is used to generate stuff too.

Partly Google’s fault, but also partly infinite growth and infinite replication in digital spaces leading to infinite slop even before the AI faucet got turned on. Frankly I think the next big nut to crack in Internet technology is finding some way to filter through the slop and that nobody is close to cracking it.

I think it will be a problem solved by structure, rather than technology.

I think we have been past the point of no return when it comes to “information pollution” for a while now, whether it is contained in a search query or an AI dataset. We may have stood a chance pre-LLM by tweaking search almost, but getting reliable information out of a general purpose LLM that indexes (more or less) “everything on the internet” is a lost cause.

I think that a reliable llm will necessarily index a closed and curated dataset, and presenting citations to the curated data for verification.
