I’ve got a cat that does that too! Getting a water fountain fixed it if that’s within your budget. My understanding is cats generally prefer running water because in the wild sitting water is way more likely to make them sick. You can also get a silicone mat to put underneath your current bowl to catch the mess, or put a towel down and replace it often so it doesn’t get gross underneath.

    • Seconding the water fountain advice. My cat will bat around any bowl of standing water that we put out for him, but is absolutely happy with just drinking from a water fountain with no swatting or anything(and tbh drinks more water). The simple fountains tend to run fairly cheap(~USD$30) if it’s in your budget and you don’t want bells and whistles, but you also have to worry about cleaning it and replacing filters and stuff so there’s a bit of an ongoing maintenance cost.

Are they spilling the water and then drinking the spilled water? They could be messing around or it could be a reaction to whisker fatigue from their whiskers hitting the edges of the bowl, if the bowl is the wrong size/shape. Also could just be messing around splashing the water cause that’s fun and cats like that kinda shit.

Because cat. I got a heavy weighted bowl because mine did the same. They got bored after a while and moved on to shredding the toilet paper instead.

The stuff about orange cats always makes me want to interject because my orange boy was the smartest cat I’ve ever had by far. It was generally more aggravating than fun, but still.

He learned immediately that I didn’t want him chewing on electrical wires, and from that moment on whenever he came up to me for attention and I’d try to calmly explain that I’m working on something time-sensitive do you think this could wait twenty minutes, straight to chewing on any nearby wiring because that will get me to touch him. Eventually ended up makeshift babyproofing any wiring that wasn’t sufficiently thick, which worked but plugging and unplugging things went from a thirty-second task to a good five or ten minutes.

He was my best friend for years though and I’d give anything to get him back.

edit: I need to add this. My favorite story of him being smart was that the one time I let his water bowl get too low he intuited how to communicate that unambiguously. He did a loud meow to get me to look, then plopped down right next to it and did exaggerated head-turns. He looks at the bowl for a couple seconds, turns his head to look at me, looks back at the bowl. There was nothing up for interpretation, it was just “hey asshole do you see what I’m looking at?” Pretty confident the other cats I’ve owned would have approached that by rubbing their head against my shin or similar.

I saw a documentary a while ago that said orange cats were created in ancient egypt as part of a massive distributed breeding programme to provide cats as sacrifices. Apparently this is when cats were selected to be more social, because they were being raised in cages with minimal personal space. And their lifestyle more like livestock than independent contractors on mouse duty, including significant contact with and reliance on humans. Gold was associated with Sun and Ra, so these colorings were selected because it was hypothesized to be more eye catching to the deity, who might notice your sacrificial cat and help you out. They said most of the genetic differences between wild and domesticated cats can be accounted for by this event. Those changes spread back to the rest of the domesticated cat population. But it’s worth remembering that your orange cat was bred to have some spiritual elevation and communication with gods.

I agree with others that it could be a) good fun chaos, or b) problem with the water dish. Make sure it is clean, full, a comfortable size, height, position. Cats really appreciate fresh water and a fountain is a good kindness for them. Sometimes it makes a slight noise and they don’t like the noise. So you have to check the return policy in case you need to try a couple of them til you find one with no bothersome noise.

Depending on the local circumstance you can consider leaving a tap dripping for them into a bowl. Like in the bathtub or bathroom sink. But you will possibly be starting a life long habit.

Or I guess you could just put the water dish in the bath tub to limit splash damage.
