Maybe not an American bugbear but when i was a kid up here my grandpa would take me to the rod and gun club sometimes. They had a biiig poster on the wall of an excavator piling up hundreds of rifles with text overlaid “Gun registration? Just ask Australia how that went for them”
Wasn’t Australia’s gun confiscation in response to a mass shooting, the Port Arthur massacre? The idea that a government could accomplish something like that is alien to the USian mind. Canada’s recent ban is very sus to me coming as it did on the heels of a shooting spree perpetrated by someone who was clearly a government informant of some kind. But the complete lack of action of mass gun bans in the US after Sandy Hook as many people point out is good evidence that we’d never get something like that in the states. I think of how Serbia a year or two ago had two mass shootings, one at a school, and it resulted in nationwide protests and calls for the president to resign, in the US that’s a slow year.
What about gun registration but it’s like a Subway punch card and every time you register 9 guns the government sends you a free gun?
